  7.  @duderdude4831  There was no Ukraine - it was just a province of Soviet Union. I know history very, very, very well. Ukraine was in Soviet times, same as Belarus a set of provinces made up of former Polish lands and to which newly taken Polish lands were added. Crimea itself was never part of Poland as it was land of the Golden Horde that constantly invaded Poland. Poland had the Cossacks that went in after Turkey - or Ottomans as they were known. Catharine the great was a great leader as she, a German princess, not only broken the back of Ottomans but also of Poland that was weaken by democracy and liberum veto. She was the one that after multiple wars with Ottomans conquered Crimea - for the first time in history for her Russia. When looking at Ukraine in prismat of history we see that they never actually had a country and are a loose set of tribes that did not join together with tribes that formed Poland. There was an uprising of what some call "Ukrainians" few hundred years ago but their lands were tiny, about 1/6 of todays huge enormous Ukraine. Bottom line is Ukraine is as big today thanks to Soviets whom made it so big. As to Khrushchev it was administrative transfer - he did it as he was Ukrainian himself. It was one big Soviet Union - I would not really read too much into it. After dissolution of Soviet Union there were so many little wars as similar transfers have created ethnic problems. The whole thing should have been solved with simple referendums - as at the end of WWI - each region voted where they wanted to be, say in German or in Poland.
