  1. People just don't understand how expensive steel is. There is a reason when you go to say Home Depot and buy a work bench it is made of paper thin stuff - it would be expensive to make real work bench of at least 3/8 plate. You can only get real stuff from auctions from old factories. Construction steel now is about $2 per lbs - more for alloy, a bit cheaper at quantities of 1t or more. Scrap is 12c per lbs. Thus steel to make economy car is already few 1000 dollars. Now imagine you can get few hundred tons out of an old ship! Big payday!
