  1. Russians probably shorten the front and use Kherson as a front city. I doubt Ukraine will capture the city or Russia will let them as it would be a major political blow. But this is hard to say - Russians may be much more concerned with taking Mariupol and finishing off army of Donbas then loosing Kherson. For Ukraine taking back Kherson would have immense political and moral boost. This is main reason for Russia to defend it.
