Comments by "" (@tomk3732) on ""Leave the area now": Ottawa police issue new warning to trucker convoy protesters" video.
Certainly using the emergencies act is going like 10 steps too far. We are talking about small protest effecting small part of Ottawa, not nation wide issue. I still fail to see why government refused to talk to their own people and also refused to provide clear path towards ending "temporary" mandates. Last time I checked our PM, when other world leaders faced similar issues, did suggest exactly that - so why not in Canada? Is he only the PM of people that like him?

Not much - all truckers that blocked the border simply... driven away. Also no emergencies act was needed... just court injunction....

@shadowguy321 I.e. it was upgraded to meet current standards, such as no arrest based on ethnic or sexual orientation - we just arrest everyone we think is enemy of the state. Canada should still uphold a lot of international stuff but whom is exactly going to enforce that. Charter can be removed via "reasonable in a democratic society" application - whom exactly is deciding reasonable? This is via section 1. In short unlimited power - same as war measures act, just with some "re-branding". Using your Japanese example, they still would get arrested as possible threat to Canada, just this time around there would be no mention of ethnic background. That is it.

@johdo9953 Well, how are they putting their kids in harms way, are you suggesting government will use deadly force to attack them? Kids would only be in harms way if there is possibility of violence. Since protesters are repeating 100x they are not going to resort to it, then it must be the other side. But so far we had no evidence of police brutality or anything similar, so its hard to point to any threat. Kids are probably mostly in hotels and many may use remote learning if already in school. If things start to get ugly they can easily get out with their moms - unless government choses to attack kids / moms. So far no indication of such threat is present. Our PM may not be a smart cookie but I think there be plenty of pp that would stop him from some mass murder.

@MrStrangechange Well, homeless stay year round downtown and no one seems to remove them by force - why is that ok?

The emergencies act is just re-wording of war act. It just sounds less "war like". No other real differences.

@starrose7949 We have to find a middle ground - protest have to be visible, send strong message but they cannot lead to not so wise PM going ballistic. Will I fight? Sure, but we better first have numbers to back us up. Revolutions are like boiling point - they take time and do happen only when people had enough. Sadly this means a LOT of pain. This is my second war act. The first one was when I was 2 years old. It was a bit different, with tanks, APCS, mechanized police force. Not sure this one is any better, given that government wants to starve people out US way. Notice how Russia wants to use tanks and US always starves her enemies? Not sure which way is better, at least tanks come and go and starvation is prolonged. My mother is afraid they block her old age security since she shared picture of our PM as a clown. You never know, maybe soon we have to talk with water running. It was not easy to remove such system & most people will not see it for what it is after its too late. Remember Soviets? Do you think the masses of communists were blood thirsty? No, they were young people wanting change. They were optimistic. They had hopes for better future. By the time it turned into a monster they could not even make a joke - or it was 5 years of hard labor.

@johdo9953 Well, kids certainly were along and none were hurt. There was no violence used so no need to worry. Kids don't have to be in the "front line". Each protest has "back area". Unless police specifically targeted kids there was no worry. No use of children's aid society.

@johdo9953 was whole immediate area evacuated including parliament? No. So I guess no one cared about kids.

@alan4sure In Paris they mobilized 17000 officers and did not let anyone into the city. No need for emergency act at all.
1
@redmapleleafwanderer But they are not exactly doing that! You have lots of "groups" hiding behind truckers - some of these may be paid by the government that do some "nasty" stuff.
1
@joaquinluceromusic Truckers certainly have political cover. Truckers are right now only in Ottawa and blocking JT view from parliament. Other then that not much is going on.

@MrStrangechange Homeless people are only removed by force from private property. I never seen them removed from public property by force - usually they are given notice / tickets etc. nothing immediate. Different cities have different bylaws so it is difficult to make general statement. For example, in Calgary it can take over 30 days to clear an illegal campsite. In Toronto there are up to 10000 homeless living on the streets.
1
@MrStrangechange Vast majority of homeless do not build tent cities. They drift between shelters and sleeping outside. If they were removed - there would be no one left - unless you suggest homeless are produced in large numbers.

It does not matter now - emergencies act suspends our constitutional rights. I.e. we are in a state of war and government has more power then Putin in Russia.
