4WD is for trucks and for truck based SUVs (i.e. body on frame not unibody).

Not true, I drive 4WD Tacoma with All terrain tires that are a bit worn and I easily pass all sedans as if they were standing still. I have a 4WD Silverado and frequently I don't even turn 4WD with all worn tires. Granted they are snow peak rated but not dedicated winter tires. Also the major issue is not snow but the uneven surface formed by compacted snow making driving anything but a truck seem crazy.

All I know is that once it snows in Calgary the few Tesla cars that are out here are as slow on the snow/ ice/ rock mix as all other sedans. I just drive past them as if they were standing still. They also have sedan suspension so on secondary roads they don't exceed around 20mph or their wheels would fly off.
