A bit biased explanation - in Kharkiv Russians had very weak forces - there was no "3rd core there" and total troop numbers were less then 10,000 - Ukraine had around 8 to 1 advantage and mostly light mechanized infantry Russia deployed did not have a chance. Russian command correctly withdrew all forces leaving very little equipment behind as ... they did not have any equipment to begin with. Screening force in Kharkiv is just example of Russian constant problem of holding large front line with little troops. It may at some point be necessary to move out of Kherson just to shorten the front line & thus no longer threaten Odessa.
