Neither will your filter.

Spot on. Marketing gimmick.

This guy sure is selling these filters ;) How much are they paying this guy? I did not use a filter now for like 20 years. Its obsolete idea. He did not mention a two ingredient purifier. You add A + B and it has no after taste. Still only for emergency use as most water around the world in the mountains is safe to drink. Just ask locals.

Sure would work great. Has been done for like 100 years or more.

Short answer is no, a $12 jacket is just too far out from $250. I used $12 aliexpress sweater at over 7000m+ (that is like 23000 ft+) and it was fine but it certainly was not "good" as say more expensive brand names. Issues are: - down distribution - some down quality issues (800 is not other 800) - durability - zipper was it like 20x difference? no, the 250 jacket was just touch better. I think middle of the road $80 is the way to go - I doubt there is any difference between $250 and $80 justifying price difference.

Exactly! spot on! I do not like umbrellas - but getting wet is just part of the game.

@earlgrey2130 Yeah the 14k miles seem a bit extreme for few years. This would be over 7 miles per day over last 5 years. However, if he includes running (say trail) next to his home seems possible, through touch unlikely. But what if "last few years == 10 years"? That would be somewhat OK - it would be like 22 or so miles per week. So weekend trip every weekend would cover it - even no running needed. Also doing PCT twice over 10 years would lower the standard (not unheard of).

They for sure are.

You are way over estimating added cold weather performance. There is no way a liner and a bivy would add together 10C so make it rated at - 11C ;) Unless you really are going to wear a LOT of clothes. Or sleep in winter 4 season tent between two large warm pp.

Heavy.

Well, guess what, your grandfather probably did as well!

I got rid of filters more then 10 years ago. Have not looked back. No filter no problem - no extra weight either.

People have been doing what you just said since sleeping bags were invented.
1
It gives you few degrees extra, no more then that. Not really worth it. Just wear more clothes in your sleeping bag.
1
WTF, layering sleeping bags has been around for like what 100 years now? Ever felt cold at night and put a blanked on? Call yourself an innovator. Main issue is weight. It is better to take on single zero degree 0F or -18C bag then combo of two bags. The combination of bags was used by pp that say did not have a zero degree bag but still want to go somewhat cold - so they were told to say use two summer bags. Easy for girls, take your regular summer bag and one your boyfriend used. Another method was to add few degrees - add bivy sack over your sleeping bag. Come on pp this has been around for ever!

There simply was not need to do this as everyone already did this. Its just marketing ploy.
1
LOL, more like 3C or 4F of warmth ;) and that is stretching it a lot.
1
@flundyyy Yes I am. It adds maybe 5F. And that is on a good day. Yes I own one of these liners. Main purpose for owning one is to not make your sleeping bag dirty. main issue is when you have the liner, sleeping bag and bivy its a lot of bags to get into or out of. Also liner is heavy. Its a nice feeling fabric but its heavy. Better system is to either get more down clothing or get two of these -1C or 30F sleeping bags which are ultra light.... but of course that is much more $$$. As for dirty sleeping bag... just ... wash your down sleeping bag! Be very gentle and do it.

Nah, just remember at -40 they are the same. Then 100F is like almost normal body temperature (light fever) Then 0F is -18C. Shoot in the middle of these ranges to figure stuff out. Americans will not get C - to difficult for them ;)
1
You do what normal pp do. Do not feel special. Its normal. Do not use wool - its old school. We have synthetics now that can keep warm if wet - main advantage of wool.
