Comments by "" (@tomk3732) on "Canada to ban single-use plastics, including bags, straws, in 2021" video.
Plastic industry would not like that idea - so its a no go.

Well we tried to use special bio straws but I saw all equipment on auction recently - not easy. Years ago we also were riding horses.
2
Deflection from rising Covid #.
2
Industry would never allow it.
2
No, protected by corporate greed & JT got an envelope to make sure he does not touch it.
2
Remember when people could not have real Christmas trees? Plastic was in - re-use the tree 30 times! Then ... same people did 180, plastic BAD, get real trees ;) Wait 10-20 years and we have it go again 180 ;) Did it all make a change? Nope. This is what we learned - it did not make much of a difference.
1
Use washable clothes - this will limit # of babies as well given hard work involved.
1
You cannot use cloth bags in most stores due to COVID. In some you have to pack stuff yourself. Just a little deal to get more money by corporate world.
1
Garbage bags? Its win - win - win for everyone - plastic industry still produces same stuff, stores no longer need to pay for packing items and JT says he is "green".
1
@BlueToronto They make small garbage bugs - there is actually sizing chart for them. Some are grocery bag sized. They come in rolls with build in tie strings.
1
@BlueToronto A bit bigger size - about same size as bags from princess auto, not from safeway. Also same quality as PA not poor quality from safeway. I.e. they don't fall apart. They are for kitchen under sink garbage.
1
@kokipopi2985 At 50x the cost - need to make $$$
1
Idea is you will have to pack your own groceries - this is how corporate world got onboard - they don't have to pay to get things packaged and say its for the planet.
1
Other plastic of course!
1
Excellent idea in time of COVID. Will you insure the place that does its own sterilization?
1
pay $$$ for them

@tmoleary7179 Yes we can problem is that current bio plastics are not much "greener" then single use plastics. "he researchers determined that bioplastics production resulted in greater amounts of pollutants, due to the fertilizers and pesticides used in growing the crops and the chemical processing needed to turn organic material into plastic. The bioplastics also contributed more to ozone depletion than the traditional plastics, and required extensive land use. B-PET, the hybrid plastic, was found to have the highest potential for toxic effects on ecosystems and the most carcinogens, and scored the worst in the life cycle analysis because it combined the negative impacts of both agriculture and chemical processing."

A lot of conservatives are very close to nature & many are farmers so idea they are somehow "for" pollution is silly - especially given that all conservative places are so clean.
1
More virtue signaling - single use items are sky rocketing with Covid spread. Some items should go - like 6 AND 8 pack rings - these are not really needed in the 1st place. Some items can be bio degradable. What about Covid?
1
plastic bags. Industry may spin some stuff that "decompose" a bit faster then regular plastics into identical sludge of chemicals - i.e. bio plastic is regular plastic with additives to make it dissolve into poison faster - need oxygen and/or light. Corn is better but not usable in all cases.
1
Impregnated paper in a lot of places + lid made of soy or other bio plastic - used in at least 50% of places right now.
1
No unless you pay - idea is for the store NOT to provide a person to pack your items for hygienic reasons and NOT to provide any bags due to a ban. Paper bags if provided will cost $$.
1
1. Political issue 2. its not really the right time to announce ban on things that are keeping covid down during 2nd wave. 3. It feels all these are not so much for environment but for corporate benefit.
1
@catharanne Single use items.
1
@catharanne reusable bags were given for free (and now again the are free) in order for people to be more hygienic + stores refused to deal with any reusable bags. Same with many other items - restaurants etc. pandemic == lots of single use items.
1
@catharanne Covid virus survives on surfaces of items. Thus touching anything in a store is a potential vector. Depending on item it can last for a very long time. This is why stores are correct in refusing to get their employees to bag into unknown bags. Gloves are thrown out each time they are taken off - no reuse. Treat virus on surfaces as fresh paint. Most pp have no clue how to use PPE correctly. As to single use utensils they are sort of needed for few restaurants to survive as they are mostly takeout now. Thus after visiting a store it is important to either throw gloves away (expensive) or not use gloves and immediately disinfect before touching stuff. Even food packaging is a vector.
1
Most plastics cannot be recycled and are burned for their energy. The ban is against single use not reusable stuff. They want people to pay $ for plastic bags for their garbage vs. getting them for free.

@Nightfall2077 What he means the move is virtue signaling for PM and money making for corporate - a win - win. Environment is of no concern. Do you care about corp profit, virtue signaling or environment? Pick one.
1
@Nightfall2077 Oh that is easy - it costs stores $ to bag your stuff. No need to bag with cool excuse == profit. exchanging bags X for more expensive option Y == profit. Virtue signaling == pretending to do something while actually it has minimal effect. They are banning many items that will have immediate replacement that is equally bad - grocery bags are frequently used for garbage = garbage bags need to be purchased == money for corp and same bad for environment. A lot of other "bans" have loop holes left right and center. Also making this announcement now during second wave is a bit strange thing to do given how everything is single use. This is as bad as recent gun law change where they ban 1000 missile systems - like you would use your PAL to buy AA missile system ... LOL. Certainly made everyone feel safer.
1
@Nightfall2077 Oh its easy. Reusable bags due to covid cannot be packed by staff == no extra work for store. More expensive bags == can be "resold" at higher profit & justification for them NOT to be free. Paper bags seem to be the only option that can keep prices low but paper bags are quite not as attractive as plastic.
