  1. They do not have air power. They also do not have air defenses. They also do not have artillery that can match the Russians. Nor do they have enough armor.

  2. The column was there b/c they were crossing the mine field. They don't have enough air defenses. Even if Geopard was there it would most likely be killed off. They were stationary as they had nowhere to go - these that tried to run got blown up on mines. A lot was abandomed by troops that simply run for their lives.
