This seems to be standard 3rd world flying practice. Planes are held mostly with duct tape. It is so bad some people will rather drive on terrible roads in say Pakistan then to fly short domestic route. It does not help that flight cancellations are routine - 50% for weather 50% for broken aircraft - heck even broken in flight (!) Two engines are there for a reason, it is rare to have both give up on the same flight (!)

Imagine you have 12min air. 12min pass and go. What do you do, a) wait few hours with no response from the pilots? or b) try to get to the cockpit to ask what is going on? Also as a mountaineer I can tell you that you do feel altitude change and especially going up. I have no issues flying on a helicopter to base camps at over 14000ft from near sea level but you certainly feel it. I also driven to over 17000ft passes - but again - you certainly feel it a lot. It is amazing the air crew did not feel much and / or did not find out that automatic oxygen masks were deployed in the cabin which is 100% sure sign of pressure issue. Extra note, you can take a lot of pressure change if you do not move much. I.e. if I suddenly went up to 20000ft as long as I did not move much, hardly at all, I would be fine. Just keep calm, very calm. Your body will not self destruct as it has no chance as long as you then quickly go down. Total luck of communication should be the main cause!

Sabotage!

In former Soviet Union every plane is overloaded. Especially cargo. Corruption plays a role. When I was in Tajikistan I had to pay cash for my luggage - never declared - nothing in computer - pilots never knew its there nor the airline. Everyone else was the same.
