@kevinw8593 So what? Even if they capture 1000 sq km so what? They cannot hold it and can be cut off or bled dry. Napoleon even captured Moscow.

@kevinw8593 Territory needs to have purpose to further your aims. Otherwise ... it does not matter at all. For example, during WWII France wanted to help its allay Poland and took about 30km belt of German land. That is 1000s of sq km! So what? This land had no value at all to France, Poland nor Germany. It did not advance any war aims. Germany took it back in November 1939. Same her - say Ukraine advances 30km deep into Russia - captures 10 villages, maybe a town. What is the aim military of this action? Feels aim is same as that of France inn 1939.

But new admin will take till Janurary (!) end of. It is unlikely Ukraine will be able to last that long.

@againsttheleftandright4065 Umm, France was not exactly an empire in 1939 & it folded to Germany in just over a month.

@Donello As memory serves Napoleon III was not exactly even 10% of the "I". What I meant by empire is not someone calling themselves an empire & one in name only but an "empire" as a meaning of "powerful". I mean Brazil was hardly ever uber powerful nation on par with say Roman empire. Yes, I gather its a grouping of countries ruled by an emperor - BUT it has "powerful sovereign or government". France in WWII put about as much of a fight as Poland did - a country that only regained its independence after WWI. Maybe keyword "colonial" is of importance.

@arostwocents Sure, but where will you go in Russia? Now you have "Russian" problem of fighting away from your supply lines. You have to take on enemy fortifications. You have more expanded front line... There just does not seem to be any "aim" of this but plain desperation - you take lots of Russian land and ask to negotiate? What if Russia says no?

@Donello True, but certainly was no longer considered an empire - colonial power, yes. But empire is associated with... the emperor. That would be over 100 years before WWII.
