  1. A fuse in a cord could simply be replaced by larger fuse making it unsafe. Same as human plugging in more then the cord can handle. Also the wire in the wall needs to be heavier gage then the one outside of it as the one outside gets air ventilation. Much bigger problem with US/ Canadian system is total luck of standards. there are like what, 20 common NEMA "standard" plugs? What about "standard" voltages? There is 120v 240v 346v 277v single phase. There is 208, 240, 480, 600 three phase. There are three prong and 4 prong plugs for just 240v 1ph. There are like 7 common plugs for 240v 1ph at 50 amps or under.

  2. On of the biggest achievements of Soviet Union was electrification of large parts of its territory. In addition to building roads and railways. Without communism countries of former Soviet Union would be no better than Africa.
