Like most Disney, it was originally a Grimms fairy tale based on old oral traditions of scaring kids into better behavior, all were made friendlier by Disney including acing out the horny dwarf, in this case. But that's why it's obnoxious too, a thousand year old tale from Denmark of the Little Mermaid was similarly appropriated without care for the source material despite that being "inexcusable" now.

  8.  @felicity1877  you're right regarding this specific storyline, I was referring more to their belief in them through the ages as a seafaring people, example: "It is not widely known that mermaids have their origin in much older Scandinavian folklore... Called Margygr in Old Norse." From Viking times, though other cultures had them too (sirens, as in the Odyssey by Homer)
