Japan has more of a Millennial generation, and they have had more room to increase their workforce participation rate. Japan is famous for aging because their Boomers are older than anyone else’s— huge, short-lived birth spike in the handful of years just after the war— but Japan’s Boomers’ fertility rate was actually on par with the US Boomers. Near-replacement-sized Millennial generation born in the 1960s and 1970s. In addition, it has been normal for Japanese women to leave the workforce as soon as they get married. They have been able to cushion the impact of their shrinking working age population by getting more of their women into the workforce. Europe and China are already close to maxed out there. Also, Japan is better at automation than anyone else. As of 2019 (the last normal year before I looked this up during a bored evening under lockdown during the pandemic), Japan was responsible for 47% of the value-added in the global automation and robotics industry. Germany was in second place at 10%. After that, a half dozen or so countries contributed 2% each and around a dozen contributed 1% each. Notably, China didn’t even make the 1% list.
