@rudysmith1552 With semiconductors, China is on the wrong side of the disruptive tech. On EVs, China was quick to make the leap when the companies in the advanced democracies were hesitant to turn away from their still-reliably-profitable traditional vehicle lines. They were able to steal a March on the competition by being the first to go all-in on the new disruptive tech. On semiconductors, all of China’s “successes” are with lenses and transparent masks when the real advances these days are entirely done with mirrors because the wavelengths required are incompatible with any possible lens material. Their announced successes are all in the old, abandoned tech regime. It’s impressive that they were able to push that tech as far as they have, but that’s a route that is never going to close the gap. (And the fact that they are dissembling about the manufacturing efficiency of their methods suggests that their successes may actually be even less successful than they are claiming.) The current state of the semiconductor industry is analogous to the advanced democracies sprinting ahead on jet aircraft while China is claiming to catch up and pointing to their fancy new propeller-driven planes as evidence. “Look, it’s as fast as a couple of generations ago! That means it’s almost as good! We’re catching up!” “Um, sorry, but no. That’s a dead end. Inherently inferior. Propeller driven aircraft are never going to match the speed and efficiency of jets…. Also, how many useless defective copies of these things do your factories build for every one of the working ones you produce?”
