To a bigger point, the issue seems to be no overarching story in the Trilogy. The idea seems to have been "Lets make 3 random movies loosely connected to the original Star Wars films". Whatever you think of JJ or Rian Johnson, the biggest problem for me is there wasn't a single story and a single director for all 3 movies. This should've been a single story told over 3 films. Instead, it's turned in to 3 different stories which resulted in a dog's dinner with a really bad lack of joined up thinking.

@hexadecimal5236 Knives Out, his first film since TLJ, has actually had a relatively good box office return and has had some Golden Globe nominations. I don't think he was the right person to pick for TLJ, but I don't think he's a terrible film maker.

I agree this is part of it. The business model of cinema means we pay before we know what we're getting. Hence why critics were traditionally important; to give critical analysis of a film. Increasingly, critics are so out of touch with modern audiences, and are being replaced by things like CineScore, it's becoming harder and harder to justify their existence. Critics probably are at their lowest ebb right now in terms of public confidence, so to an extent they are trying to preempt public opinion to get some credibility back. .

@hexadecimal5236 It's hard to say, I mean I didn't think Knives Out was "woke". I think with SW movies under Disney, there seems to be a policy of executives passing A LOT of notes to directors about how they want the movies to be. That might constrain anyone.
