  2. Paramilitaries have declined significantly in Ireland. While soem still exist, both police forces have said their activity has shrunk a lot. Weirdly, both sides not work together because they transitioned in to generic criminal gangs. Republican and Loyalist paramilitaries for example regularly do drug deals. They worked together a few years ago to shoot a police officer who was investigating them all. In other words, it was highly unlikely these guys were "connected". They probably just wanted to mess with the poor guy.
