Musk has ulterior motives with his AI doom mongering though. He wants to control inevitable regulation and influence it to benefit his own companies, while potentially disadvantaging the competition. You seen it when he previously tried to work as part of the Trump Administration. He knows government regulation of AI is coming at some point, and wants to be in the room when the decisions are made. I have worked in ML for some time, and we're not anywhere near close to a lot of the things Musk is saying. Some of our AI capabilities are pathetic in particular domain spaces. The things he describes, most of us alive in 2019 won't be around to see them (should they come to pass at all).
