  1. Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 and established several permanent military defense bases. I think that it has been a contentious issue since then and Putin then supported an eastern area that aren’t ethnic Ukrainian. When many areas to the west of Russia recently joined NATO, Putin must be concerned about his own country’s future security. I think that the eastern area is a red herring but Putin is not going to willingly cede Crimea. Many areas within the previous USSR are a diverse population with different ethnicities and languages and might not want to be aligned with a certain country as they might be marginalized, but it’s also possible that the eastern area in Ukraine is being used as a pawn. I think that Crimea is a different issue and because of it’s position in the Baltic Sea might be more strategic or for other resources they posses.
