I was married to a narcissist for 24 years. I became an RN at age 20 and within 2 weeks became a charge nurse in ICU. When you work nights the only person higher than you is the nursing supervisor so every responsibility basically falls to the charge nurse unless it’s a crisis. I had to be the one to tell family members and loved ones had passed away. In our 40’s my husband who was a Director at a large company had to lay off one of his employees as he was told to cut his staff. I helped him make the decision and it was based on poor performance, lack of interest and poor attendance. After my husband gave him the news the employee received a nice generous severance package and expressed gratitude that it gave him the motivation to change careers since he didn’t like what he was doing (computer department). My husband then told me that I didn’t know how hard that was. It was like a slap in the face. Tell someone married 40 years that their spouse had died and you think that’s easy? One man was being discharged the next day and had a massive heart attack and died before the spouse could even get to the hospital. Narcissists feel nothing unless it affects them directly without regard to anyone else’s struggles.

@CaptainFutura Yes, you are correct. Having a full blown case of the flu with high fever, body aches, shaking chills while caring for your 1 year old all day and still expected to have dinner on the table when he gets home from work. 6 months later and he has a cold with no fever or other symptoms but is sicker than I ever was and expects to be catered to. When I developed symptoms of severe RA with numbness in my arms an legs along with other symptoms, I was told that I was being dramatic, being a hypochondriac and telling me that I was lazy and had no need to see the doctor. The marriage ended at that point and I have been dealing with complications ever since. I think that the stress of dealing with him exacerbated the disease since I didn’t have risk factors or family history.

@Anisky123 Stress can absolutely affect you. Chronic stress can affect your immune system. I was in a similar situation and my husband couldn’t mow the grass because, as his parents kept saying, he was allergic to grass. It was fine for me to mow it even though I was allergic to it and had asthma. Their thought process is so self-focused they can’t see beyond themselves. My spouse worked in a facility with more than 10,000 employees but told me he ate alone because he couldn’t find anyone to eat with. You can’t change other people and can only change how you react to them or you can limit or end contact.
