  1. After suffering for years with multiple back problems that led to more PT and denial of severity until I lost the use of one leg due to nerve damage. I finally had surgery with only partial relief and kept going through the PT, pain management route and the final straw was to be told if I only did more sit ups, my pain would go away. As an athletic person who was now having trouble performing my job as an RN, finally found someone who performed more surgery and found I had fractures and scar tissue around the hardware that was no longer secure, so every time I moved, the titanium rod moved. I regained my function but started having more issues and the spondylolisthesis was not just a displacement but would be displaced whenever I moved. I could no longer function at my current position and took a 40% pay cut for a desk job but I had problems sitting. Any pain medication required monthly visits for a prescription as well as drug screens for other substances. I didn’t want medication, I wanted the problem corrected. More PT and eventually I had to have more extensive surgery as my lower extremities were getting worse. It’s a long descent to disability and I had several autoimmune disorders that worsened due to the stress and pain. Finances as a single person are a primary concern and the doctors recommended counseling. I had copayments for the multiple office visits to physicians, PT and medications and they didn’t understand that paying more money would lessen my stress. There were plenty to offer advice but not to offer actual help. Physicians told me that I couldn’t return to work but I was living on savings for almost 4 years. I paid private disability insurance that was denied and Social Security denied me multiple times and the physicians didn’t understand why. The frustration, anger, pain and loss of function changes your personality as well as your viewpoint of healthcare. I certainly understand the helplessness that the shooter felt but can’t condone harming another person.
