@wvu05 Yang should have been absolutely trashed by all media. As someone who has been paying a VAT for 30 years and operated a VAT registered business, I can tell you that he has zero clue how a VAT actually works. Unfortunately, I don't think many Americans in the media, mainstream or independent, know themselves exactly how it works.

@wvu05 And it's not just that. A VAT is specifically designed to not tax businesses, in order to avoid double taxation. It's basically a sales tax, collected in stages, with all the business stages getting paid back. It's only the final consumer that doesn't get paid back. Yang even posted a pass through rate study, that he didn't understand. It outright said that there was a near 100% pass through on standard rated goods and services. It was only by including lesser rated and zero rated goods and services that the pass through rate lowered. Yang mistakenly thought the lower pass through rate meant that businesses were paying half or more of the tax, when it actually meant that nobody was paying a tax on about half the stuff. That means his VAT/UBI combo wouldn't actually have giant corporations paying into the UBI, like he claimed, and they'd only get the benefit of trillions extra being spent. Money would flow to corporations and those at the very top faster than ever before. His plan was nothing like the Alaskan dividend, which he kept comparing his dividend to. They have giant corporations paying the people, which is how a UBI should also be paid for to be sustainable.
