Dumbass. All it would take is for someone on SSI disability and SNAP, neither of which Yang has stacking with UBI, already getting $1000+ a month in assistance. They wouldn't benefit from UBI but would still have to pay the VAT on many items.

@Obama6464 It doesn't stack with standard SSI disability. It also doesn't stack with other forms of assistance that could have some people already getting $1000+ a month. The VAT/UBI combo will only be a negative for them.

@Obama6464 I said SSI disability. He absolutely does not have it stack with SSI. But, SSI can stack with SNAP, and put people over $1000 a month in assistance already. A VAT would only be a negative, for them, since they wouldn't benefit from the UBI. Even SNAP alone can put some people over $1000 a month, currently. SNAP also doesn't stack with UBI.

@linbinnash His plan doesn't stack with SSI disability, or SNAP, and could hurt many disabled people currently getting both. They might not benefit from UBI, but will still have to pay the VAT. His plan doesn't account for children. A single parent of 1+ kids gets half that of an adult couple with no kids. His plan doesn't account for cost of living. It will benefit people in less urban areas, and states with fewer taxes who do less for their citizens, more. That could almost be a Republican plan.

@linbinnash You can't opt out of the VAT. If UBI doesn't benefit you, then the VAT makes you worse off. Some things not considered staples, and not exempt from Canada's VAT: electric bill, phone bill, internet bill, cable bill, games, toys, basically any entertainment with a cost, non staple snacks and pop, a lower but still present VAT on gasoline, personal hygiene products, household cleaning products, home maintenance and repairs, vehicle maintenance and repairs, ....

@linbinnash You know how averages work, right? Some people get less. Some people get more. SSI disability is also stackable with SNAP, which Yang also doesn't have stack. Some people on SNAP, alone, get over $1000 a month.

@linbinnash Also, the Alaska "analogy" isn't actually analogous to Yang's plan. Alaska, like Norway, basically partially nationalized their oil, making oil companies pay them for their resource, which they then give to, or spend on, their citizens. Yang's plan is more like taxing gasoline consumption and having the consumers pay for it, and not making the oil companies pay in at all.

@linbinnash It matters where the money is coming from. A VAT doesn't make giant corporations like Amazon pay in, as Yang falsely claims. Alaska has the oil companies paying the people.
