@thatguy2608 Also: give everyone an automated monthly deposit and put numerous social workers and administrators out of work. Also: don't actually tax Amazon (a VAT doesn't tax businesses) and give consumers $3t, which would make Amazon about $60b extra a year they can put towards automating faster.

@SR-lh4rm Bullshit. I didn't say it doesn't generate revenue. I said he's clueless. It doesn't tax businesses, as Yang falsely claims. What Scandinavian countries do to make the rich and businesses pay in: very high unionization, higher wages, paid parental leave, more paid vacations, higher income tax on the wealthy, having them pay for retraining, having oil companies with majority state ownership, etc. ... and then they tax their better paid, higher standard of living, consumers, for more social benefits. Yang skips most of that, and doesn't have businesses paying in. If you want a VAT, do Bernie's stuff first.

@kyledehaven394 Also, Yang is spouting nonsense about how a VAT will force the likes of Amazon to pay taxes. A VAT is specifically designed to pay businesses back for any input VAT. If you don't actually tax Amazon, then hand consumers trillions a year, you're only making Amazon tens of billions extra a year, while still not making them pay a dime.

@robertjenkins6132 You're misinformed or lying. Yang does not have the UBI stack with SSI disability, only SSDI and VA. SSI disability does currently stack with SNAP. If someone is already getting $1000+ in assistance of a variety Yang doesn't have stacking with UBI, then they'll be worse off under Yang. They may be allowed to opt to keep what they already get but they can't opt out of paying a VAT on many things. Universal free public college is open to all the public, but it doesn't universally hand money to rich people going to private expensive colleges. Not exactly comparable.

@kyledehaven394 They use it because it generates revenue by taxing consumers. Same reason countries, states, use a sales tax. It does not tax businesses. Those countries use other methods to make businesses pay in, not the VAT. Yang is clueless or lying. Since a VAT won't actually tax Amazon, and since their share of US consumer spending is 2%, handing consumers $3t will make Amazon an extra $60b a year, while still paying jack shit in taxes.

@kyledehaven394 No. The Baker paid 2 cents in VAT and kept it, only sending 4 of the 6 he collected from the supermarket. He was fully paid back. It was the supermarket that paid 6 cents. They sent in 4 of the 10. They were fully paid back. The government got 2 + 4 + 4 = 10, and you paid ... ? 10. Everyone else was fully paid back. So, who paid the VAT?

@kyledehaven394 If you click on Amazon's "How VAT works in Europe" it also explains how businesses get their input VAT credited back even if they collect less output VAT, meaning consumers paying the VAT to a profitable business are also paying back an unprofitable businesses' VAT payments.

@kyledehaven394 What are you talking about? Everyone got paid back their full amount, except you. The baker's company ends up paying nothing in taxes. You ended up being the one who paid the entire 10 the government collected. It didn't end up taxing the businesses, at all, which means Yang is spouting pure bullshit when he claims a VAT will force corporations like Amazon to pay taxes. Amazon will still end up paying zero taxes, but will make tens of billions from extra consumer spending.

Since it won't truly tax Amazon, and since Amazon's share of US consumer spending is 2%, handing US consumers $3t will only make Amazon an extra $60b a year. That would, in turn, make Bezos something like $6b extra a year. He could buy a new billion dollar yacht every year, pay $100m in VAT, and still be in the plus $5.9b from Yang's VAT/UBI scheme. Walmart's share of US consumer spending is 2.8%. That'd make them an extra $80+b a year. That'd make the Waltons extra billions a year more than they'd pay into a VAT. Etc. The companies could invest those extra tens of billions a year into automating faster, and leaving you trying to live on $12k a year even sooner. If the plan doesn't make corporations pay in, you'll be shooting your own dumbass self in the foot.
