  1. Sounds mostly right. I'd only change limiting it to the "leadership" of the Confederates. The majority of Southerners elected pro slavery representatives, voted against abolitionist candidates. The same racist majority that then voted for segregation and against desegregation, for another 100 years after the war.

The same racist majority that left the Democrat party in 1968, and voted for racist Wallace, who won 5 Southern states, before they switched to Nixon in 72. Almost 2 centuries of blatantly voting to oppress black Americans.
