@michaelknight2897 You think people who started settling on farms and in cities, inventing things like beer and cheese, and riding around on horses and carts, remained just as physically fit as hunter gatherers? That humans didn't lose fitness, first, before athletes improving performance? The modern Olympics started during the Victorian Age. The vast majority of people never had to run anywhere, for any length of time, then. What we've done is recorded performances improving from an already relatively sedentary lifestyle, after starting to settle about 10k years earlier, not right back to hunter gatherers.

@dave4deputyZX Someone with a club? We evolved physically in ways beyond earlier bipeds, that is only really explained by becoming long distance runners, persistence hunters. Starting with homo-erectus.

@dave4deputyZX We suck at sprinting, compared to other animals. We didn't invent bows until relatively recently. We had to run animals until one of them couldn't run anymore. There's like 1.6m years of evolving as runners, before even spears, and another 350k before bows. So, what's weird about pushing our own limits until one of them drops? We migrated from Africa to South America on foot, thousands of years before the first human settlements on the planet. We were on the move a lot, not sitting on a little island. Archaeologists had been assuming modern roles, and labeling remains with hunting tools as males. They've now tested many of those ancient remains from the Americas and found that almost 50% were actually female. In 15000 years we have changed a wolf into a chihuahua. In 10000 years European males have gone from an average of 5' 4" to 5' 9". What's the big hangup in accepting that things were somewhat different thousands of years ago?

@westonmeyer3110 But they do. And, they actually do even better at ultra marathon swimming, than running. "In 2014, Knechtle and his colleagues analyzed 30 years of finishing men and women’s times for the 46km Manhattan Island Marathon Swim (28.5 miles/45.9km). Once again, the ladies took the lead. The results demonstrated that the best women per year were 12-14% faster than the best men."

@michaelknight2897 You know the difference between lifting weights and cardio, right? You can lift all the weights you want, all day long, won't make you a good runner. Might even hinder it. People were walking from home to work, or within the boundary of their farms. People hardly had to run anywhere anymore, for anything.
