I wish she had explained NATO better though. There is an actual NATO budget. All countries have been paying their assigned share of that budget. Canada actually pays more per capita than the US. The US's share is exactly the same as Germany's, a country with about 4x fewer people. Also, the only time NATO has ever enacted article 5, to defend a member country, was for the US after 9/11. So, from a Canadian perspective, the US isn't paying its fair share of the budget, plus owes a bunch of allies for Afghanistan.
The goal for NATO members to increase their own national military budgets to 2% of GDP, is separate from the actual NATO budget. The US military puttering around in the Pacific, or South Atlantic, and how much they spend doing that, has absolutely nothing to do with NATO. Trump making out like their entire military budget goes to NATO is utter nonsense.
