Reagan, who had been an FDR supporting Democrat, and supporter of Gahagan, bought into the Red Scare tactics (or maybe out of a cowardly fear of being cancelled), and switched support to Nixon. You can also blame Nixon for the Southern Strategy. He led the Republican party to be anti-socialist and racist, gathering all the worst people into one party. Plus, he started in on the privatization and lifting of regulations.
