@johnpoole3871 Nope. A VAT is specifically designed to NOT tax businesses in order to avoid double taxation.

@captainron7120 Him. I'm a person who operated a VAT registered business for years, and filled out VAT returns for years. Yang couldn't even grasp the pass through rate study he linked to on his VAT page, that actually showed everything else on his VAT page was nonsense.

@Georgeeboy He clearly doesn't understand how the VAT works. And being prepared to enact policies, when you have zero clue how they work, should be a concern for the mayor position, as well.

@kylequest You didn't say anything that magically made him grasp that a VAT doesn't tax corporations, like he claimed. It didn't magically erase his complete failure to grasp the pass through rate study he posted himself. If you don't have corporations paying into the UBI, via the VAT (Yang himself argued they were dodging the other taxes), then they only get the benefit of extra trillions being spent, funneling money to the very top faster than ever before. That's nothing like his repeated comparisons of his dividend to the Alaskan dividend, which is paid for by corporations. Nothing you said magically makes his "analogy" actually analogous.

@kylequest Rofl. I was one of those businesses, dumb dumb. Businesses get to reclaim their input VAT. The EU represents 29 countries, which say it's not a tax on businesses, that you're arguing against. Here's Canada, to make it 30 ... "The GST takes into account the cost of inputs – the factors used in manufacturing or production – at each stage of the process to avoid double taxation. Input tax credits enable partnerships, businesses and self-employed workers to recover all GST paid on goods and services purchased for business purposes by deducting them from their GST payments. Final consumers are not entitled to such credits, which means that they pay all the GST on every item purchased. The GST is thus a multi-stage tax on final consumption." http://publications.gc.ca/Collection-R/LoPBdP/BP/prb0003-e.htm#HOW%20THE%20GST%20WORKS(txt)

Yang can't do math though. He completely failed to grasp how a VAT actually works, who it actually taxes.

@hostronic Yes, and it's not even round about. It's very straight forwardly designed for the entire VAT to be paid for by the final consumer. Every VAT registered business in the chain gets to recoup their input VAT, and ends up not paying anything. While Yang was claiming a VAT would tax corporations like Amazon, Amazon had its own European webpage with tutorials on how a VAT doesn't end up being a tax on businesses.

@kylequest How is pointing out one of your politicians is clueless about something, wasting your time? You'd rather remain cultishly blind, and spew nonsense, than hear the truth?
2
@kylequest So, yes, you'd rather spout nonsense. That a VAT is specifically designed to NOT tax businesses in order to avoid double taxation is just a fact. That Yang didn't grasp that is just a fact. If you want politicians willing to enact policies they clearly don't grasp, all the power to you.

@kylequest Nobody is hiding the basic fact that I'm pointing out. "a consumption tax because it is borne ultimately by the final consumer. It is not a charge on businesses." https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/business/vat/what-is-vat_en
