My "hunch" is that 12 deaths per 197 confirmed cases, is about a 6% death rate. Or, it means there are a couple hundred more US carriers, who should be in the hospital but aren't, likely to avoid costs, because your healthcare system sucks.

Bruce strkland The global 3.4% death rate is based on deaths per confirmed cases, not guesses as to how many asymptomatic carriers are wandering around. Nothing really dark about confirmed deaths to confirmed cases ratios. A 6% rate indicates there are likely Americans with symptoms who aren't heading to the hospital at the same rate as people in other countries, likely because they're weighing costs instead of just heading to the hospital at the first sign of symptoms. And, if Americans are heading to the hospital at half the rate as other countries, it will end up spreading faster.

@Sophie-and-Ken Umm, your anecdote doesn't represent reality. The US has a massively higher flu death rate than Canada, even if you multiply Canada's number by 10, to account for population difference. https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/flu-deaths-us-80000-last-winter-1.4839917
