I think the Republicans have been giving a home to various right wing extremists, since the 50s. They took in all the extreme anti-socialist McCarthy types, they took in the anti-Civil Rights racist types, they took in the anti-feminists, they took in religious extremists, they took in Tea partiers, and then the Trump cult ... becoming a party of lunatics.
