@marcusj1167 Mississippi and West Virginia are actually the worst states in numerous categories. And, with a popular vote, every single vote would count everywhere. Politicians would have to campaign everywhere, instead of mainly battleground states. The 30% of Californians that voted Republican would have their votes count, rather than none count. Republicans would need someone as popular as Reagan to win, not moronic duds, like Trump.

It's actually the electoral college which negates the need to campaign everywhere. If I'm pretty much guaranteed a win, or loss, in a state, then there's less incentive to spend much time campaigning there, with a winner take all system. A lot of the campaigning is then directed at swing states. If every percentage point counted, in every single state, that's an incentivize to campaign for every possible vote in every single state.
