@mow3186 The earliest Gaelic is from the 8th century, the earliest English is from the 5th. However, all languages evolve from earlier ones and Celtic and Germananic languages both evolves from Indo European languages. However, English is now a world language due to the British Empire the largest Empire the world has ever known, the USA was a colony of that Empire.

@anthonyburn1010 Though Lindon born, (Chiswick) I've lived most of my life in Kent and now Surrey and the only person who I can ever remember saying anything derogatory about the North came from Northern Ireland. Most people actually talk with affection about Scotland, Yorkshire, the Peak district, the Lake district etc.

@50upss I've never met anyone who laughs at anyone because they live in the North or anywhere else, that's just rediculous.

The British isles represent 600 seperate islands. The largest or greatest in size is known as Great Britain and is home to the English, Scots and Welsh. The second largest island is known as Ireland or Eire and is home to the Irish.

@AllanTheShoutyCelt What I said was not disinformation its all factually correct. The Saxons were an early type of coastal raiders much like the later Vikings and were named after the knife they used. Also the germanic peoples originated in Scandinavia not Germany, you are getting confused with the term germanic which doesn't mean German.

Its only a few ignorant football fans who make such claims, most scousers are as proud to be English as anyone else.

@joshg2603 As I said previously: 'It's only a few ignorant football fans who make such claims.' And as you said: 'So why even care, or have anything to do with them?'

@joshg2603 Anfield has an away side fan capacity of 2,000 people. Out of a population approaching 70million that is a tiny minority.

Duh ! Thats why its called The isle of Man and not Britain. 🙄

No, the British Government is from all over Britain, hence the name. The English are the only country in Britain who don't have their own devolved Parliament.

@ossian1937 That's only because much of the world speaks English including the wealthiest and most advanced.

@John Smith The so called Anglo Saxons never called themselves by that name. Alfred the Great refered to himself as Ænglicynn (kin of the Ængli) the Ængli were from modern day Denmark, not Holland. Though English like Dutch is a Germanic language, but English was heavily influenced by Scandinavian languages which is where the germanic peoples originated. Though English is not considered a creole language as it was never a pidgin language. Runes are actually older than Ogham and can be traced back to the 2nd BC century, where as Ogham goes back to the 4th BC century. In fact it has been suggested that Ogham was derived from Runes, though others suggest Latin. The Irish are a Celtic people who originated in central Europe from the area in modern day Germany, Austria and Switzerland and are descended from Indo Europeans just like the English. All modern languages were influenced by neighbouring languages and though English has many Latin derived French words, French also has many English derived words itself.

@AllanTheShoutyCelt No, they didn't, none of the people who settled in Britian called themselves Saxons, the people in Hampshire were actualy know as the Gewissas, the later term West Saxons was a geographical one. When Alfred the Great wrote about them collectively he called them Ænglicynn. The Saxons were early vikings who used a knife or sword known as a Seax and were named after that. All these coastal Vikings were uniformly known as Saxons, despite all not being the same people.

@John Smith Yes, the original customs were indeed all oral and when they did start to write them down it was on perishable materials like wood that havent survived. Though most experts believe that Ogham originated either from Latin or from Runes which it bears certain similarities with that are not shared with Latin. The peoples of these islands are all of Celtic descent who arrived here in the iron age and later Norse. The people before them who built Stonehenge were Bell beaker people and before that there were Neanderthal and be for them it was all under ice with no people at all. For these islands to be populated after the ice age they had to arrive from somewhere else, they did not just spring up from the ground.
