Very interesting and informative. However, what we now know as the EU has far deeper and darker roots. In 1938 Hitler led an official visit to Rome to meet Mussolini the leader of fascist Italy. While the leading characters enjoyed the usual pleasures of Rome, behind the scenes experts from both countries were in discussions to create a pan European dictatorship. Later in 1941 another conference was held in Berlin where again experts in their field laid out their plans in long speeches. These speeches were later published in a glossy publication with a forward by the Nazi economics minister Walter Funk and entitled The Eurospaisch Wirtschafts Gemeinschaft, which translates as The European Economic Community. These proposals included, a single currency, governance by an unelected high authority and promised peace in Europe in fact all that we have become to associate with the current EU. Nevertheless, after the defeat of both fascist Italy and Nazi Germany these plans were shelved....... or were they? In Rome in 1957 not only Schuman signed the papers that gave birth to the EEC ( they didn't even bother to change the original Nazi name), but so was Nazi lawman Walter Hallstein who had been at the original 1938 visit with Hitler. Hallstein went on to be its first President and in 1973 wrote a book entitled 'Europe in the Making', in which he complains of a few vestiges of democracy still clinging on within the EEC, but then tells how they can soon be removed.
