  1. Thankyou for an interesting and thought provoking discussion. Unlike you, I've never actually lived in Germany . However, I do have German friends and have visted Germany on a few occasions. Personally, I think the reason Germans don't say they love their country is due to the War and the adverse effects of rampant Nazism. A German friend got quite tearful when he expressed his shame about WW2 and when I tried to console him by saying he shouldn't feel shame for something that happened before he was even born, he told me you have to be German to understand. Perhaps this is why Germans don't understand Brexit. After the vote one of my German friends rang me up very concerned and wondered if we had all become Far Right ? Which I believe is what the German media had been claiming and even the gutter press here in Britain. I told him not to worry as it was far from the truth, we just valued our Sovereignty and democracy and wanted to make our own decisions, we were not anti European, just anti the antidemocratic EU. I also think all the differences you outline between our two cultures and indeed all cultures, makes them rich and interesting and definitely worth preserving and being proud of. Especially in a world that is trying hard to stamp out national pride and love of ones rich unique culture.
