A couple of years ago my partner and I went to Bristol for a weekend and she booked up a cheap youth hostel. When we got there a young eastern European girl asked for our passports. 'I don't need to 'pass a port', I told her, 'I travelled here by train in my own country, I haven't been abroad'. She asked me if I had ever stayed in a youth hostel before, and I told yes, on many occasions but this is the first time I've been asked for a passport in my own country. As I seemed to know what I was talking about she booked us in straightaway, but perhaps she was right and they have changed the law there too? It seems strange to have a to show a Passport, when you are no where near port or wish to pass through one.

@alia9087 Yes Alia, but in Europe you need ID to even leave your house and risk arrest without it. Though here in Britain we have always enjoyed our personal freedoms, sadly this now seems to be becoming a thing of the past.

@alia9087 Well my partner is French and you must always have your ID there, or face arrest. In fact when I first met her, we went to a club in London and my car was broken into and the contents of her handbag stolen. This includes both her French ID card and her passport. I asked what she was doing taking these documents out when we were only going clubbing, and she told me it was because in France you are obliged to.
