In South Africa during the Boer war 100,000 Africans fought on the side of the British against the Dutch descended Boers, why you might ask ? Because the Africans wanted British rule to extend to the Dutch controlled areas because it would give them greater rights. South Africa became self governing in 1934 and Apartheid was introduced after WW2 in 1948 after the descendants of the Boers, now known as the Afrikkans took over the whole colony.

@richardhussey171 Elephant Shit ! Cecil Rhodes was Prime Mnister of South Africa between 1890- 1896. The Boer war didn't start until 1899- 1902 so Rhodes was actually out of office at the time. The reason the Boers were rounded up was because they were attacking British soldiers and then returning to their farms to avoid detection and arrest. Despite Rhodes many flaws, he was a man of his time and no worse than others, though he did specify that no one should be banned from his scholarship due to his race or colour, at least that was quite forward thinking and many black South Africans have gone to Oxford financed by a Rhodes scholarship. It's interesting to observe how only the white colonisers of South Africa are heavily criticised. However, not the black Koikoi and Bantus who took the land from its original natives who they called by the rather derogatory term of the San (scavangers picking up from the ground) who they raped, killed and enslaved. The British also banned slavery in 1807 and introduced for the first time rights for black South Africans. This upset the Boers who believed blacks and coloured now had greater rights than they did and led to the Slachters Nek rebellion. The Rebellion happened after a Boer was summoned to court for beating his black labourer and refused to obey, rebelling instead. After a shootout they were caught, taken to court 5 were found guilty and later hung.
