I was born in West London in 1950 and remember seeing my first black man around 1956 as I walked along holding my mothers hand. I pointed him out in astonishment and said to my mother, 'oh look mum, that man is black'. My mother was mortified and told me off for pointing at him as it was rude. I was astonished, because I had never seen a man with black skin, today no child would be astonished. In fact in some parts of London they would now be astonished to see a man with white skin. How England has changed in my life time, its almost unrecognisable from the country I was born in.
