When I was a teenager I used to live in a Kent village and if we were up to childish pranks, we would all scatter if we heard the village Bobby coming on his motorcycle. You could hear the pip pip pip of his radio sounding from some distance. These days I live in Surrey where I followed two short dumpy police women walking up the high street the other day, one was on her mobile phone swinging her hat in her hand as they shuffled along. Neither would be capable of commanding any respect whatsoever, and certainly no teenagers would scatter at their approach, even if they were engaged in criminal activity.
