I remember hearing about the fuss made when northerner Wilfred Pickels was employed on the BBC as an announcer and there were many complaints about his northern English accent. This was of course in the days when the BBC was a proud custodian of our language and you would hear references to exemplary 'BBC English'. This us no longer the case, in my car today I turned on radio 4 and was appalled by the level and amount of ethnic English. Wilfred Pickels by contrast would be hailed as a fine example of spoken English, and indeed he was.
