De Gaulle vetoed British membership because he wanted to get the Common Agricultural Policy established for French benefit and knew that the Brits if members would vetoe such a wasteful policy. My experience of the French has always been extremely positive, I've never had any animosity shown towards me, only kindness. I even ended up marrying one and she not only loves me, she is a staunch defender of Britain and the British. The damage caused during WW2 is regrettable but is just what one would expect in a country occupied by the enemy. Yet the Normandy landings was an American idea, the British wanted to continue through Germans main ally Italy, and if it hadn't been starved of supplies it would have advanced to Germany before the Russians. In any case it still took Italy out of the war in 1943 and the large German army still surrendered before they did elsewhere. France is also littered with memorials to British soldiers many of them erected and paid for by grateful French citizens, which also rather destroys your claim that they hate us .
