Montgomery also served in WW1 and was shot through the chest and collapsed in no mans land. A comrade endeavored to save him, but was also shot and fell on top of Monty, which in effect protected him from any other injuries. Monty lay there slowly bleeding to death and gasping for air untill both bodies were finally recovered after dark. Once back behind the British lines two graves were dug and Monty's comrade was buried in one and the other left ready for Monty. Because doctors though he had very little chance of recovery. However, to everyone's surprise he started to improve and eventually made a full recovery. Imagine if he had of died on that cold wet battle field ? For a man who paid such a pivotal role in WW2 25 years later, history could have been very different indeed.

@zorbeclegras5708 The BEF was by far the smallest force there at 390,000 men. It was far smaller than the French army of 3million, or Belgium army of 650,000 and much smaller than the attacking Germans army of over 4.5 million men. Also my father fought at the battle of France and was lucky enough to be evacuated from Brays dune near Dunkirk. I have studied both in some detail and probably know more about it than most people do.

@joangratzer2101 Alone ??????? England was never alone. In 1940 as well as being a leading member of Great Britain which was, and still is, comprised 4 seperate British countries. Great Britain was also the head of British Commonwealth, 57 countries in 1940 and still currently 54 countries around the globe.

@zorbeclegras5708 The small British contingent was only there to support the French, but once the French refused to fight how could the British support them ? The evacuation was planned and executed by the Royal Navy and was a brilliant example of naval expertise. The combined German Kreigsmarine and the Italian Regina Marina falled to evacuate their combined forces from Tunisia in 1943 when over 267,000 troops were forced to surrender to British General Alexander.

@jwenting If these resources had fallen into German hands they would have used them against GB, the only country left fighting them.

@HistoryHustle The Germans didnt think the British moral was low, after the Battle of France they praised British tenacity even amongst the poorly trained and equipped Territorials.
1
@jwenting At that point these resources no longer belonged to an ally, they belonged to Germany and needed to be destroyed. The Germans themselves bombed Rotterdam killing 900 people and making 80,000 homeless Also around 25,000 Dutch men fought in the Waffen SS and many others collaborated.
1
@jwenting Yes and that's the big difference, the Brits bombed strategic sites so they couldn't fall into German hands, the Germans bombed the the city full of civilians.
1
@jwenting Sorry Captain Duckman but that's nonsense. If the Dutch hadn't been a neutral country British troops could have been based there as they were in France. But the Dutch decided to remain neutral and so by the time the Germans attacked all the British could do was to stop them gaining Dutch resources to further their aims. Especially when you consider Dutch resistance only lasted five days, what could anyone do in such a short time period but what they did.
1
@peterrobbins2862 Nonsense ! Without Montgomery the war might not have even been won at all, or taken far longer. For as soon as he took command the Nazis were finished.
