Montgomery also served in WW1 and was shot through the chest and collapsed in no mans land. A comrade endeavored to save him, but was also shot and fell on top of Monty, which in effect protected him from any other injuries. Monty lay there slowly bleeding to death and gasping for air untill both bodies were finally recovered after dark. Once back behind the British lines two graves were dug and Monty's comrade was buried in one and the other left ready for Monty. Because doctors though he had very little chance of recovery. However, to everyone's surprise he started to improve and eventually made a full recovery. Imagine if he had of died on that cold wet battle field ? For a man who paid such a pivotal role in WW2 25 years later, history could have been very different indeed.

@joangratzer2101 Alone ??????? England was never alone. In 1940 as well as being a leading member of Great Britain which was, and still is, comprised 4 seperate British countries. Great Britain was also the head of British Commonwealth, 57 countries in 1940 and still currently 54 countries around the globe.

@peterrobbins2862 Nonsense ! Without Montgomery the war might not have even been won at all, or taken far longer. For as soon as he took command the Nazis were finished.
