No, Expat comes from the latin word Expatriate, meaning to live outside your native country. This is different to immigrating, where you go to live permanently in another country.

If they wanted to stay living in Spain, they could have applied to remain. The fact they they haven't is their own choice. I'm English and live with my French wife here in England, she applied online for the right to remain, it took her a few minutes on the computer. If they wanted to stay in Spain they could have done the same.

@erichramone7812 Yes, especially if he jumps last as the others will break his fall.

@peterwest5525 Yes Peter, I don't expect many Brits abroad speak in Latin . 🤭

@johngosling1 Well, judging by these comments many people don't seem to understand the Legal difference between an Immigrant and an Expatriate.
1
@aldofromsf If you read the comments they actualy are. In fact many seem to think they mean the same.

@JaZy-0_0 As I have already explained 'Expatriate' is a Latin legal term that means to live temporary outside one country of origin. Therefore, its completely different from an emigrant or an immigrant. An emigrant is someone who leaves his country, to be an immigrant in another to live permanently there, it's not temporary and that's the difference.

@ravent3016 Exactly ! However, some people refuse to see this, and just like to use the term to mock Brits abroad.

@Kaka-zs4cp Regardless of your skin colour, if you immigrate to Spain and buy a house and intend to stay and integrate into the Spanish way of life, you are an immigrant. However, if you go there for work on a 6month contract, or buy a holiday home there to stay 6months of the winter, you are legally not an immigrant you are an Expatriate. This is not a point to argue about, it's a fact.

@joopspeth6483 Yes, because they have immigrated here to live permanently, not temporary as an expatriate does.

How can the rise of the right be a 'Challenge to Democracy across Europe' as claimed in this video ????? The rise of the right is a Result of Democracy ! Europe has suffered under the yoke of the left since the last century, both fascism and Nazism were of the Left, not the right. Even the EU was founded by them, so now it's the time for the right to replace them all.

If they really were immigrants, there would be no problem because they would want to settle in Spain. However, they don't, they want to live there but still be British with a British passport. That's the problem, and why they call themselves expats and not Immigrants.
