Patton was only a minor General who couldn't see the bigger picture, he was no 'military giant'. His fame is from Hollywood fiction rather than the battlefield fact. Montgomery was in a completely different league and in the future history will judge him far better than it does now.

@NathanAurelianus Yes indeed , Patton might have been killed due to his anti semetic views as well as for war crimes committed both in Sicily as well as in Germany. Let alone his views on the Soviets. The slapping incident was minor in comparison. His death was at least very convenient and stopped him being put on trial at the same Nuremberg court as the Nazi's. This would have been very embarrassing for the USA.

@NathanAurelianus The murder of POWs in both Sicily and in Germany in contradiction of the Nurenberg Charter agreed in London. This charter held individuals responsible rather than states and was the basis for the later Geneva Convention. Axis officers found guilty of similar offences to Patton were executed.

@NathanAurelianus According the London Accord agreed by all the allies. No officer could claim they were only following orders. The blame went all the way back to their CO and many Germans were convicted and executed on these terms.

@NathanAurelianus Patton told the soldiers under his command that he wanted them to be an army of killers and they mustn't take any prisoners. In Sicily they obeyed him and committed the Bascari Massacre, though Patton some how got out of that. However, at Chenogne in Belgium he was accused of murdering German soldiers in a field and his diary entries for that date are strangely missing from his memoirs. Later there are other allegations in Germany itself when he was in charge. These alone would be enough to convict him, and that's why his sudden death was certainly very convenient .

@NathanAurelianus It would have been far too embarrassing for the US to have one of their own Generals on trial at Nuremberg, they were supposed to be the good guys. Far better to quietly bump him off and make him into a hero instead.
