  2. The rack bushings look soft and saturated with leaking engine oil. That could make the bushings mushy.

  3. I worked on two Sienna from the 1fe Mz era and noticed that the transmission mechanic failed to unhook the power steering pressure switch. That ripped the wire for the sensor. Without the switch, the amount of steering wheel play increased exponentially. You would then think that the rack and tie rod was worn out. I replaced the switch since the pump was being replaced. A faulty switch could also cause excessive play.
