  1. In March 1989 I stopped in the Pinkham Notch visitor center at the base. A big sign inside warned of the potentially deadly weather conditions and how many have died hiking to the summit. It was in the 40s and clear at the base. I was in my 20s and in good shape from biking and hiking hills. It was less than 4 miles to the summit, I had warm clothes on and gloves so I thought I was prepared. I reached the summit about an hour later and it was in the 20s and covered in ice with 90mph gusts. Ate lunch at the summit then hiked back down.
