Betsy Farris The explanation is simple. People including me put their masks on when leaving the house before touching things. Because once you touch things and then touch your mask to put it on you are risking spreading the virus to the mask. Wouldn't you rather be overly cautious than not cautious enough? There's no cost or downside to putting the mask on sooner. I have just as much freedom and liberty with my mask on.

Why do you wear a mask? Highly improbable you'll catch the virus. And masks are not 100% effective. Now, just replace mask with seatbelt. Why do you wear a seatbelt? Highly improbable you'll be in an accident. And seatbelts are not 100% effective. See how stupid that is?

@petergriffin2005 There's a downside to quitting smoking, too. There's a downside to wearing a condom, too. There's a downside to being a selfish self-absorbed idiot who cares only about himself and his freedom, too.

Risk assessment has two factors: a) probability and b) consequences. That is, a) how likely will something bad happen and b) how bad are the consequences? How risky is skydiving? Well, 99.9% of the time the chute opens. But in 0.1% cases it doesn't open and you die. How risky is Russian roulette with a revolver? Well, you have a 5/6 or 84% chance of winning. But you have a 1/6 or 16% chance of losing, and if you lose you die. How risky is not wearing a mask? There's no definitive numbers but one thing is known: masks restrict and reduce the distance your exhaled breath travels. The more people who wear them, the less the virus spreads.

@Rea263 Let me ask you something. Do you lock your doors and windows? If so, why? Locks are not 100% effective in stopping intruders.

@Rea263 If you don't like being told what to do then how do you deal with the thousands of laws telling you what to do and not do?

@petergriffin2005 Wanna bet?
