The fact remains that the South slave states started the war with the North free states over the right to own slaves to keep their economy going. I don't know why this is giving you problems.

  14. The man didn't ask for a semester-long explanation; he asked a simple question. Any educated person knows the simple answer is "Slavery". Without slavery and the southern economy it was built upon the war wouldn't have happened.

That blow has been long aimed at the institution, and was at the point of reaching its consummation. There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union, whose principles had been subverted to work out our ruin.
