Sounds similar to what happened to Schenectady, NY, same timeline. Btw, the rust belt also extends along the NYS thruway to Albany and down the Hudson river valley. Many smaller towns and cities succumbed to the same set of problems.

65% of workers employed by one company was the problem that a lot of American cities faced in the 60's and 70's. Places like Albany, NY and NYC survived because of diversified economies.

Totally agree with all you guys. As a matter of fact, that map should extend all the way across through New England, including parts of southern Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, northern parts of Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey and all of New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Rhode Island as most of the towns located there contributed to the Industrial Revolution in one way or another.

I remember hitchhiking on I-90 through Gary, Indiana area back in the mid 1970's. It was the dirtiest, filthiest and smelliest area I ever was in, even today. Man, it stunk!

You know your city stinks when your neighboring city blocks off access!

@Jason Radice Since the 50's and 60's (right after Corning got out of office) , Albany has diversified into medical, IT technology services, retail, and other small and medium sized industries. If you live within a 50 miles radius of Smalbany (they love it when you call it that), then that's the place to work as all the best paying jobs are there. It has weathered recessions and is the 16th largest test market of products because of its diversity. Yes, that used to be true but not anymore. Btw, not defending (I really hate their traffic and attitude towards State workers) just saying!😁
